Front wheel alignment
Front axle only — often all an older car needs.
Commonly called tracking, this sets the toe angle on the front wheels. It is the adjustment that goes out most often, because the front wheels take the kerbs and the potholes.
On many older cars the rear axle is fixed and cannot be adjusted, so measuring all four tells you nothing you can act on. In that case the front-only job is the right one and there is no reason to pay for more.
How you know you need it
- A slight pull to one side that you correct without thinking about it
- Feathered wear on the inner or outer edge of a front tyre
- You have kerbed a front wheel
- The car has an older, non-adjustable rear axle
What we actually do
- 1 Targets on the front wheels, car on the alignment ramp
- 2 Toe measured and compared against the figure for your car
- 3 Track rods adjusted and locked
- 4 Steering wheel straightened and checked on a road test
Questions about this job
Is tracking the same as alignment?
Tracking is one part of alignment — the toe angle on the front. A full alignment also measures camber and caster, and on four wheels rather than two.
How do I know which I need?
Bring it in. We will measure and tell you whether the rear is adjustable on your car. If it is not, you pay for the front job.
