Four-wheel alignment in Westhampton

The cheapest way to make a new set of tyres last the miles you paid for.

About 45 minutes in the workshop Open seven days, Sunday included

Alignment is the angle each wheel sits at relative to the road and to the other wheels. A few tenths of a degree out does not look like anything, but it means the tyre is being dragged sideways every mile you drive. That scrubs the tread off one edge while the rest still looks new.

A four-wheel alignment measures all four, not just the front. On most modern cars the rear axle is adjustable too, and a rear wheel out of line makes the car track crooked no matter how carefully the front is set.

How you know you need it

  • The car pulls to one side on a flat, straight road
  • The steering wheel is not centred when you are going straight
  • One edge of a tyre is worn while the rest has tread left
  • You have just hit a pothole or kerbed a wheel
  • You have just fitted new tyres and want them to last

What we actually do

  1. 1 The car goes on the alignment ramp and targets are clamped to each wheel
  2. 2 We measure camber, caster and toe on all four wheels and show you the before reading
  3. 3 Adjustments are made to the manufacturer specification for your car
  4. 4 You get the after reading as well, so you can see what changed

Questions about this job

How often should it be done?

Once a year is sensible, and always after new tyres, a pothole or any suspension work.

Two-wheel or four-wheel?

Four-wheel if the budget allows, because it measures the rear as well. Front-only is enough on an older car with a non-adjustable rear axle, and we will tell you which yours is.

Will it fix my steering wheel being off centre?

Usually yes — an off-centre wheel while driving straight is one of the classic signs.
