Free tyre check
Fifteen minutes, no charge, no appointment, no pressure to buy anything.
Tread depth is easy to misjudge by eye. The legal minimum in this country is 1.6mm across the central three quarters, and three tyres below it is three separate offences — up to £2,500 and three penalty points each.
We measure all four properly with a gauge, set the pressures to what the manufacturer specifies for your car, and look for damage you cannot see from the driving seat. If everything is fine we say so and you drive away. That happens often.
How you know you need it
- You are not sure how much tread is left
- A long trip is coming up
- The car has been sitting for months
- You have just bought it second-hand and want an honest look
What we actually do
- 1 Tread depth measured at three points across each tyre, inner, middle and outer
- 2 Pressures set to the manufacturer figure for your car, not a rule of thumb
- 3 Sidewalls checked for cracking, bulges and kerb damage
- 4 Age checked from the DOT code — rubber hardens with time, not just use
- 5 The spare looked at too, if you have one
Questions about this job
Is it really free?
Yes. No charge and no obligation. If your tyres are fine we tell you they are fine.
What is the legal minimum tread?
1.6mm across the central three quarters of the tyre, all the way round. Grip in the wet drops off noticeably below 3mm, which is why most people replace before the legal limit.
How old is too old?
Rubber hardens with age. Over about five years is worth watching even with good tread; over ten and it should be replaced regardless. The date is moulded into the sidewall and we will show you where.
