Wiper blades
Ten minutes, and the difference between seeing and guessing in the rain.
Wiper rubber hardens in sunlight and tears on frost. Once the edge has gone the blade smears rather than clears, and at night in the rain that smear turns oncoming headlights into a wall of glare.
It is also a straightforward MOT failure. A blade that does not clear the screen properly fails the test, and it is one of the cheapest things on the whole list to put right.
How you know you need it
- Streaks or smears left behind after a wipe
- Juddering or chattering across the screen
- A squeak on every pass
- Visible splits or missing sections in the rubber
- Patches the blade no longer touches at all
What we actually do
- 1 The right blade identified for your car — fittings vary more than people expect
- 2 Fitted and tested wet, not just clipped on
- 3 Screen washers checked and aimed while we are there
- 4 The rear blade too, if yours has one
Questions about this job
How often should they be changed?
About once a year. They degrade with sunlight and frost as much as with use.
Will worn blades fail an MOT?
Yes, if they do not clear the screen effectively. It is one of the easiest failures to avoid.
Can you do it while I wait?
Yes — it takes about ten minutes and no appointment is needed.
